International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It started as a Socialist political event in Europe to promote equal rights, including suffrage for women, and was celebrated for the first time in Europe on March 8th in 1914 but not until 1975 in the West! We have come a long way but still have so far to go. This year, the UN's theme is “Empowering Women - Empowering Humanity: Picture It!" envision a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination. Empowering women economically will certainly help us get there.
Happy International Women's Day!
