Yikes! Images like this have got me rethinking the whole 'coffee to go' idea.
Back in the day, the 50's and 60's, people sat down in a coffee shop or diner to enjoy a cup of coffee. There was no such thing as cup holders in cars, in strollers, or in shopping carts. Modern convenience and marketing have created a big environmental problem.....mountains of coffee cup garbage! I've gotten pretty committed to always carrying my own reusable shopping bags with me where ever I go. I only had to force myself to go back to the car to get them a few times, before I learned my lesson!
Most of us have a To Go mug that we use to take our coffee To Go from home. Why not challenge ourselves to do the same with the mug as we do with the shopping bags? Carry yours with you and ask the barista at the coffee shop to put your coffee, or preferred beverage, in your own mug instead of the disposable (not necessarily recyclable) paper cup. This will have a huge impact on the number of paper coffee cups and plastic lids that are going to the landfill every day and reduce the carbon footprint required to manufacture and distribute them.
I'm going to challenge myself to give it a try, how about you? This could prove to be a little tougher than the shopping bag challenge!
